I snatched up my books. My chair tipped back on two legs and crashed to the floor as I stood. Was this what Sophie wanted? Did she want to get me angry again to see what I would do?

‘Ben!’ Mr Slender called after me as I rushed out the door, but I ignored him.

I stumbled down the corridor, adrenaline pumping into my limbs. My infrared vision flashed on and off. My teeth ached and I felt this weird urge to sink them into something. Or someone. Maybe Sophie was right to be worried about me. Maybe I was destined to turn into a mindless killing machine. Every other zombie killed people and ate them. Why shouldn’t I?

After I got infected, I’d started to believe there were two types of zombies: biters and fighters. Biters were the crazy mindless killers who’d do anything for a mouthful of brains. Mr Crumpet had wanted me to eat Sophie so I’d become a biter.
